International Project At the Yaroslavl Library of Nekrasov (ul. Sverdlova, 25a)
His name is written both in the Koran and on Hollywood posters. His face is memorialized in frescos in both Pompei and Kostroma. He fame is globe-spanning, and his name is Alexander the Great. Russia has had both their “great” and their Alexanders, and as such, we name him “The Macedonian,” regardless of the fact that he lived in a multitude of places across the world (and not just in Macedonia). In his 33 years of life he conquered parts of Europe, Africa, Asia with no intention of stopping, driving his armies ever forward, over mountain and desert ever dreaming of finding the ends of the earth. In his search for the new, he united the old, united the world, east and west.
And just as he made the world his, the world has now claimed him. In history, literature, music, and art he appears as a Muslim prophet and a Christian prophet, a philosopher, a traveler, a conquerer - the image of a Roman emperor, the image of a Byzantine saint. In Persia, he is a horned devil, in Greece – a philosopher-hero. In Turkmenistan he is a wizard and superhuman, and in Russia he is the patron of their emperors.
The Exhibit “Image of Myth” traveled from Italy to India, Russia, and Greece. The Italian Institute of Culture became the Russian partner for the project. On the foundation of the international presentation and collection of iconographic photo-documentation, the Regional Agency for Creative Initiatives organized a interdisciplinary artistic-educational project, including exhibits, lectures, discussions, and film showings.
